Belvedere Meets Hillsborough

We’re currently working on a new estate in Hillsborough, opposite the Burlingame Country Club, on what the real estate broker claims is the finest street in town. The project is being built by a custom home developer couple of long-standing friendship and partnership. All of our previous work for these clients has been in very traditional styles, French chateaux, Tuscan Villas, East Coast Hamptons for example. We were surprised when they showed us the inspiration image for this project – a cliff soaring, cantilevered contemporary home in Belvedere.

On our first project with them, their own personal home, the design was not only traditional, but an almost authentic French Chateau – parts of it are indeed centuries-old antiques (ceilings, paneling, fireplaces, leaded glass) – and we assumed that was the style direction they preferred. However, this couple is forward thinking and young at heart, which makes working for them such a pleasure!

In keeping with the size of the property and its prestigious location, the house they requested is a large one, over 10,000 square feet, with six generous bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, a great-room style living and dining room, open kitchen, family room, media room, exercise room, home office and a four car garage.

First Floor Plan

The entry, main living spaces and large decks are on the second floor to take advantages of the views of the property and the golf course across the street. There is grand staircase from this level down to a lower terrace below.

Off in a corner of the property is a separate guest house, with two bedrooms and its own living spaces. The pool deck and infinity pool are this house’s front yard.

We plan for the home to have the latest in high-efficiency technology, including it’s air sealed and well insulated envelope, and zero-net energy as required per the new California Building Code. There is however one traditional aspect to the house – a porte cochere – so that the guests can keep dry when being dropped off at the front door, just like in the good old-fashioned Hillsborough mansions. Everything old is new again…
